Blizzard's September 1 World of Warcraft hotfixes include a direct damage increase for Frost Death Knights, with the developers saying they want to improve the specialization's performance in single-target encounters and two-target cleave. The changes sit inside a wider hotfix package spanning World of Warcraft: Midnight and several supported Classic modes.
For Frost Death Knights, Howling Blast's damage to its main target and Obliterate damage are each increased by 15%. Frost Strike receives a 20% damage increase, while normal melee damage rises by 10%. Blizzard's note frames the package around targeted performance rather than a complete redesign of Frost's rotation.
The Frost buffs are the clearest class change
The percentages give Frost players a reasonably clear expectation: core direct-damage buttons should hit harder after the hotfix is active. The exact effect on a character's overall output will still depend on gear, talents, encounter length and how much of a fight is spent in the single-target or two-target situations Blizzard is trying to address.
It is therefore safer to read the patch as a tuning increase than to promise a particular ranking change. Blizzard publishes the ability adjustments, but real raid and dungeon performance depends on much more than four isolated percentages.
Unholy Death Knights also receive a fix. Blizzard says it resolved a problem where Mastery: Dreadblade and Foul Infections were not increasing the critical-strike chance of Plague Erupt effects as intended. That is a bug correction rather than a published blanket percentage buff.
Hotfixes cover more than one version of WoW
The September 1 post is part of Blizzard's rolling hotfix log, which includes fixes for Midnight, Mists of Pandaria Classic, Season of Discovery, Burning Crusade Classic, WoW Classic Era and Hardcore. Not every line applies to every player, so checking the game version and class heading is more useful than assuming the entire list affects a single character.
Blizzard also reminds players that hotfix timing can vary. Some server-side changes take effect as soon as they are implemented, while others require a scheduled realm restart. A few issues cannot be fixed without a client patch at all. That means a published hotfix note is not always proof that every realm is already behaving differently at the exact moment the page is updated.
The post includes additional fixes across quests, encounters, items and Classic content. For most current retail players, the Frost Death Knight tuning is the most immediately measurable class change in this batch because Blizzard supplies clear damage percentages and an explicit performance goal.
Players evaluating the change should test it in the content they actually run rather than relying on a target-dummy number alone. A 20% increase to Frost Strike does not translate directly into a 20% character damage increase because that ability is only one part of the specialization's total output. The same is true of the 15% Obliterate and Howling Blast changes.
The useful summary is that Blizzard is pushing Frost upward in focused combat situations and fixing an Unholy interaction at the same time. The September 1 hotfix log will continue to be updated as further changes are applied, so class players should treat the published page as a living record rather than a one-time patch-note document.
